Using Digital Tools like X (Twitter) to Fight for Human Rights

By Lucy Wanjiru

The fight for human rights has taken on a new dimension with the advent of digital tools.
In Kenya, activists and organizations are turning to social media, online platforms, and
digital campaigns to advocate for human rights and hold authorities accountable.

Digital tools have made it easier to raise awareness on critical issues such as police
brutality, gender-based violence, and corruption. Social media platforms like Twitter,
Facebook, and Instagram have become powerful tools for mobilizing communities,
sharing information, and organizing protests.

Online petitions, virtual campaigns, and digital storytelling have also emerged as
effective methods for pushing for policy changes and justice. These tools allow activists
to reach a wider audience, engage with supporters globally, and pressurize authorities
to act.

While the digital space presents challenges, such as misinformation and cyber threats,
it remains a crucial avenue for amplifying voices and driving the human rights agenda
forward in Kenya and beyond.
